Plan of workshops: Kijów_Kraków / Ukrainian Music Scene 2023

Starting from October 1st, we are launching workshops as part of Kijów_Kraków 2023. The workshops will be led by Oksana But, Sofia Herian, and Mariana Marchel.


Workshop schedule:


01.10 | Sunday | Strefa club, 31 św. Tomasza Street, Kraków


1:00 PM - 3:00 PM | Family workshops with Oksana But

Oksana But is an artist with a strong creative personality and a researcher of Ukrainian folk culture, including rituals, festivals, dances, and music. She performs traditional music, plays the cymbals, and sings. She is the leader of the 'Buttia' ensemble, which has been active in the folk music scene for 21 years, and she is also a part of the younger group, the Krachkyvka Village Band. Oksana teaches singing, dancing, and leads games and activities for children. At the Strefa club, she will be conducting family workshops for children and adults, teaching traditional Ukrainian games, songs, and dances for children.

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM | 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM | Singing workshops with Sofia Herian


Sofia Herian is a Ukrainian folklorist and singer, a musician, and a teacher of traditional Ukrainian singing. She is a graduate of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts (Department of Folklore and Ethnography) and has extensive experience in teaching folk music.

The Saturday workshop program includes songs of summer and autumn: haymaking, harvest, wedding, lyrical, and humorous songs.


7:00 PM - 8:00 PM | Traditional Ukrainian dance workshops with Sofia Herian

The workshops aim to introduce participants to traditional dance music, including rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and also teach the basics of dance steps, figures, and individual dance elements.

11.00 AM - 1:00 PM | 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM | Singing workshops with Mariana Marchel

The program includes Ukrainian multipart songs and work on vocal emission.

Mariana Marchel has been singing traditional songs since her early childhood and learned them directly from her mother, Iryna Klymenko. As a child, she performed alongside her mother in the renowned Ukrainian ensemble Drewo. They later joined the group Hurtoprawci and performed in Canada, Switzerland, and Latvia.
