Marko Markovic Brass Band / Serbia

The band presents the tradition of Balkan wind orchestras in a classical, exemplary dimension, and yet, at the same time, they make an attempt to interpret this tradition anew in a new, modern way.

Marko Marković inherited the love for music from his father, the legendary king of trumpet – Boban Marković – who has been playing the instrument for several decades, mainly leading the legendary Boban Marković Orkestar, which we could see in 2003 during the CROSSROADS Festival in the Main Market Square in Krakow. The band was later renamed the Boban & Marko Marković Orkestar. Apart from its own great albums, the music played by the Boban Orchestra could also be heard in the famous soundtracks for Underground and Arizona Dream.

In line with the family tradition, Marko started playing the trumpet before he was five years old and since then he has been passionately focusing on this instrument. Marko and Boban played together in an orchestra for many years. Marko Markovic collaborated with many famous artists, including Emir Kusturica, Goran Bregovic, DJ Shantel, Ivo Papasov, Esma Redzepova and more. In 2006, he starred in Guca!,  where he played the role of Romeo. The musical was based freely on the motifs of Romeo and Juliet. It should be stressed that the plot of the film was placed in the reality of the famous trumpeter festival held in Guča, where Marko and his father performed many times. “My son is now a better musician than I am,” said Boban in 2010.

Marko Marković formed his own Brass Band in May 2016. His recordings and concerts, euphorically received by the audience, leave no doubt that today he is one of the greatest music stars in southern Europe. The tradition of the Balkan wind orchestras, which is an inseparable part of the culture of the region, has many admirers and fans all over the world. Somebody said that “it's more than music, it's part of identity, it's a matter of honour.” The Romani music scene, with its exceptionally fast tempo and incredibly strong energy, has become one of the hallmarks of the European world music scene.

The combination of great energy and longing melancholy leaves no one indifferent.
