Banda Nella Nebbia / Lithuania/Poland

Winners of the Grand Prix of this year’s Polish Radio New Tradition Folk Music Festival bring music never heard before in our circles! This explosive mix, enchanting with its blend of energy, precision of performance, spontaneity and discipline, is bound to be outstanding.

Banda Nella Nebbia is a project by the Lithuanian composer an bassist Justinas Važnevičius, performing under the pseudonym Franciszek Szpilman. He has invited musicians from Sejny and Warsaw to join him. Their music intertwines elemental jazz and notes of avant-jazz with rock dynamism and influences of traditional music. Listeners are reminded of works by Frank Zappa, John Zorn and the rock group Primus. And there are plenty more connotations: there are influences from traditional Lithuanian, klezmer and Polish music.

The clear artistic vision brought to New Tradition by Banda Nella Nebbia earned Szpilman the Czesław Niemen Prize, awarded to outstanding personalities. The musician immerses himself fully in stage presentation, performing daring bass guitar parts while conducting his colleagues at the same time.

Szpilman previously led the Lithuanian ensemble Banda Dzeta, which performed live in Poland a few years ago. Now it’s time for the Cracovian premiere of his new, outstanding formation.
